Patrols roads and streets to enforce traffic laws in order to prevent traffic accidents (i.e. enforces traffic laws relating to use, movement, operation, registration & licensing of all vehicles & size, weight & operation of commercial vehicles), conducts traffic stops & issues citations based on determination of probable cause of traffic violation (e.g. records all events on video &/or audio tape if applicable, processes vehicle registration, determines safe location to initiate traffic stop, activates overhead lights to pull vehicle over, conducts high speed chases on non-complaint vehicles/occupants, positions vehicle to ensure safety of violator, approaches vehicle & issues warning or traffic citation & ensures vehicle pulls back out onto road safely; recognizes unusual or threatening conditions in cases of vehicles operated by persons under influence of alcohol &/or drugs & pulls vehicles off road; administers field sobriety test to DUI suspects &/or makes DUI arrests per guidelines) ensures compliance with applicable sections of Ohio Revised Code (ORC) (e.g. safety belt requirements per ORC; speed limit requirements per ORC &/or all other applicable traffic law sections of the ORC) provides assistance to motoring public (e.g. advises dispatcher of road conditions of need for snow removal &/or salt application, tree removal; utility problems affecting roadways, etc) changes tires; jump starts malfunctioning batteries; lifts &/or positions injured motorists; transports motorists to safe locations &/or transports motorist for fuel; sets fuses an warning for potential hazzards; positions patrol car to ensure safety of motorists, self, vehicles & traffic flow; arranges tow truck assistance for disable vehicles; operates equipment used in enforcement of traffic laws (e.g. radar &/or laser, etc.) removes debris from road (e.g. dead deer or other animals, trees &/or branches; vehicles parts &/or fallen attachments).
Investigates criminal incidents (e.g. misdemeanor & felony crimes (e.g. drug sale/use, weapons cases, domestic violence, fraud, property damage, trespass, stolen property, thefts, etc. to include all applicable criminal code in ORC) & violations of related laws within jurisdiction.
Collects and preserves evidence for statistical & court use; collects blood, body fluids &/or human tissue samples; analyzes evidence and determines criminal acts or cultibility; initiates and completes all necessary forms to include report, narrative and action taken, collates evidence packaging, seals & submits for storage, crime labs; enters case information onto computer system to includes LMRS or other related data bases, contacts crime victims; makes field sketches of crime scene; interview &/or obtain written statements of witnesses, locates & secures at-large suspects with outstanding warrants & advises of charges & procedures &/or arrest/incarcerates suspects with outstanding warrants to include chasing fleeing &/or combative suspects. Performs duties related to patrol & law enforcement (e.g. trains & mentors new officers, participates in security/traffic details to include crowd control, severe weather situations, natural disasters & traffic control, provides field orientation to new officers, conducts employment background investigations, performs finger printing for public or private citizens; performs administrative tasks related to law enforcement activities (e.g. answers requests for information & assistance, ensures care of patrol cars (e.g. washing, cleaning, checks fluid levels, etc) operational efficiency of related equipment (e.g. camera, film, flares, flashlight, radar & laser calibration checks) Prepares for prosecution all reports relating to criminal acts as established by this or any other agency. Testifies in Court as to facts of criminal acts, determination of criminal / crash investigations.
Performs one or more technical or specialized function related to law enforcement operations as assigned, to include, but not limited to, crash investigations, evidence collection/technician, motor carrier inspection, DUI instruction, operation of radar/laser, firearms instructor, operation of taser, domestic violence specialist, school resource officer, Canine handler, etc.
Enter into computer data base all pertinent data as may be established by this or any other agencies for the reporting of criminal activities, crash data, or any other data as required.
Performs crash investigations into the circumstances surrounding vehicular crashes.(e.g. investigates, obtains witness statements, takes technical measurement, draws detailed positioning of vehicles and persons involved in vehicular crashes, takes photos, initiates and completes reports as directed by this agency or outside agencies). Issues traffic citations based upon determination of probable cause of traffic violation involving a crash, prepares reports for prosecution and charges of serious vehicular crimes involving a crash. Maintains traffic control at crash scenes, assist EMS personnel in the rescue of persons involved in vehicular crashes. Request assistance from outside agencies when applicable (e.g. state patrol, commercial carrier enforcement agency, state/county/township road departments for traffic control)
Performs related duties as assigned by supervision.
Must possess a high school diploma or GED; valid Ohio driver’s license; successful completion of OPOTA certified basic police academy (applicants that are in the academy or awaiting the academy may still apply)
