The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in providing support and assistance to an individual with developmental disabilities and special needs. This position requires a compassionate, energetic, enthusiastic and patient individual who is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for an individual who has experienced life-long neglect in institutional living environments. The DSP will work closely with the client in various settings, including her group home residential setting and various activities in the area. Frequent visits to open park spaces, YMCA’s, pools and recreation, etc. The goal is to significantly enhance the schedule of daily activities and ensure the client’s safety, comfort, and well-being.

Duties

Assist client with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, G-Tube feedings and medication management.
Monitor and document client behavior or health status.
Provide client observation to always ensure safety and well-being.
Engage client in recreational activities to promote exercise and fitness. The client possesses a seemingly endless amount of energy. A willingness to spend time in outdoor settings is essential. This is not a sit around and observe position, this is a get up and do opportunity.
Providing transportation services as needed. (Must be 18 and possess a clean driving record, valid driver's license and current insurance)
Care for this client is a team effort providing care on a 24/7/365 basis. The client also has a history of abnormal sleeping patterns. The goal is for the daytime hours to be productive and active such that the overnight hours are primarily hours of sleep and rest. However, it’s important to note that overnight hours are designated as “awake” hours.
Support the client in achieving personal goals related to their development and growth.
Maintain a clean and safe environment for the client, adhering to health and safety regulations.
Participate in training sessions on CPR, First Aid, and other relevant topics to enhance care skills.


Qualifications

Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities will be considered but it is not required. A willingness to commit to excellence in the care of another, vulnerable, person is critical. Skills can be learned. Commitment, Dedication, Enthusiasm, Energy, are qualities only you can bring.


Strong observational skills to monitor client behavior and health effectively.
Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while also being self-motivated.
Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with client, family, team members and healthcare professionals.
Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to help others are essential traits for success in this role.
Previous experience in group home settings or similar environments can be an advantage and will be discussed.

Important Notes:
Technological devices will be used in various capacities, most notably, audio/video equipment will be in place in the residential setting.


Employment will be through SafeHaven Care Services. However, it is also important to understand that you will have direct contact with the client’s family on a regular basis with regard to scheduling, activities, performance expectations, etc.
