Under general supervision, the HVAC Service Technician performs tasks relative to the inspection, operation, maintenance and repair of all heating, ventilating, and refrigeration equipment and related controls.   



  • Inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, modifies, and installs HVAC equipment, including compressors, receivers, condensers, boilers, cooling towers, chillers, fan-coil units, pumps, valves, and evaporators. 
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical and control systems related to HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including motors, relays, circuit boards, thermostats, sensors and actuators.
  • Calibrates and repairs components of pneumatic control systems.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair on other equipment throughout the campus as required.
  • Assists in building, renovation, and remodeling projects on campus as necessary.
  • Performs other duties appropriate to position requirements as assigned by supervision.

Works under general supervision on routine work referring questionable cases to Director of Buildings & Grounds



High School Diploma/Equivalent

EPA certification for refrigerant recovery



Minimum of 3-5 years of journeyman level experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair in the HVAC & R trade.

Specialized Training:     

Knowledge and ability to evacuate and recover refrigerants from all equipment.


Skills, Attributes

  • Understanding of the theoretical principles underlying the operation of HVAC and Refrigeration systems and practices of diagnosing and correcting problems related to their operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, mechanical layouts, repair manuals, wiring and schematic diagrams in order to diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC & R equipment.
  • Ability to use volt-ohm meters, ammeters, and other electrical test equipment to diagnose problems.
  • Adept in the use of materials methods and tools typically required to perform repairs, including hand tools, soldering torches, leak detectors, refrigeration gages, vacuum pumps, and refrigerant recovery systems.
  • Ability to identify, obtain pricing and prepare orders for repair parts.
  • Ability to use a computer to enter work order and repair information and to use a building automation system to assess equipment status.
  • Familiarity and compliance with safety practices and protective equipment related to the repair of HVAC & Refrigeration systems, including electrical safety, lock-out/ tag-out, and handling of refrigerants and compressed gases.
